Computer Support For Beginners
Computer support - tech support for your laptop, desktop, PC, mobile phones, and so forth - is absolutely critical should anything on your computer fail. We’re so reliant on our computers these days for email, work, productivity, etc that if your computer crashes, you can be completely lost.
In this article, I’ll discuss the various issues that can cause your computer to stop working properly, and also explain the different computer support options as well as computer support careers available.
What is computer support?
Computer support as a career is basically the ability to fix hardware and software problems on laptops and desktops. Most of these problems are relatively straightforward:
-With software, it’s generally installation and driver issues
-With hardware, it’s generally improper installation, outdated equipment, and/or malfunctioning equipment
Computer support technicians are well-paid, and they perform a variety of functions - some are specialists (such as hard drive repair) and some are generalists (such as general PC repair shops).
When your computer fails - whether you’re a Mac or PC - you’ll need computer support to get you through the day.
What types of computer support are available?
That depends on what you’re looking for. Generally, support comes in several forms:
-Online support. These can include laptop forums, Dell online internet support, Mac customer communities, and so on. Online support is the least reliable, but is free and available 24/7
-Remote computerĀ support by phone or internet. Generally this comes straight from your manufacturer - whether that’s hardware or software. Typically, this support is provided through laptop warranty but can also be added for an additional cost. Sometimes companies such as Best Buy and Circuit City sell additional, add-on warranty that includes thorough phone computer support as well.
-In-person computer troubleshooting. This is the most expensive but also the most reliable. Computer repair shops include local repair stores, big retailers such as the Geek Squad at Best Buy, and national chains like Tech Geeks that have multiple retail locations
How do you find computer support?
The first place to look is through the internet. Search Google for your particular problem, whether that’s hard drive crash, laptop crash, desktop monitor broken, and so on. There are usually many repair shops and expert technicians that are willing to help fix your problem.
When it comes to computer support, cheaper is DEFINITELY not better. Go with companies that have a strong track record of fixing computers, whether through recommendations or online reviews. Especially with laptops, as they are difficult to fix, you should go with people who are experts in the field.
If the internet isn’t available, use your phone book and search for computer repair centers or PC repair or laptop support.
If a phone book isn’t available, use 411 phone directory or ask friends and family for recommendations of local electronics stores. There are usually people here that can assist you in whatever computer problems you have.
How do they service computers?
Computer service depends on exaclty the nature of your problem. If you have a hardware problem, generally they’ll open the laptop case and drill down to see what piece of equipment isn’t working right. If it’s a software problem, they need to review your operating system, drivers, software, and so forth to figure out what’s causing the problem. Often it could be as simple as a bad driver, or as complicated as a tough Trojan virus that’s in your computer email.
Computer service really depends, and is somewhat like being a doctor for computers. Service depends on diagnosing the problem and then figuring out the right solution.
Repairs can be expensive - after all, it’s a complicated piece of electronics and it is very valuable since it contains so much personal and professional data.
Don’t spare money when it comes to computer repair. Find the best person, get their support and advice, and get your computer fixed as fast as possible.
